Community sporting clubs and associations are the backbone of the Central Highlands.  Powered by passionate volunteers, they create opportunities for participation, connection and community pride.  However, many organisations face ongoing challenges including volunteer turnover, limited succession planning and difficulty attracting and retaining diverse leaders.

Leading from the Front is a practical workforce sustainability program designed to strengthen the off-field leadership of sporting organisations.  It supports committees and volunteers to build capability, improve governance and plan for long-term success.

Delivered by Sports Central, Leading from the Front is a part of the Lead Connect Grow initiative, funded by the Victoria State Government.

What Participating Organisations Receive

Participating organisations receive practical tools, tailored insights and expert support to strengthen leadership and workforce capability. This includes a governance and workforce assessment using the Australian Sports Commission’s Game Plan modules, a workforce skills and diversity profile, and a clear recommendations report and action plan outlining priority improvements.  Organisations also benefit from an advisory session to explore ongoing support opportunities, strategic partnerships, available resources and potential funding pathways.

How the Program Works

Participating organisations are supported through a structured four-phase process designed to strengthen governance, leadership capability and workforce sustainability.

The program begins with an organisation snapshot, where key information is gathered to establish a clear baseline of current governance structures, leadership roles and workforce capacity.

This is followed by a gap analysis and future needs assessment, where risks, capability gaps and opportunities are identified across governance, workforce planning and diversity.  This phase also considers future leadership and workforce requirements to support long-term sustainability.

In the recommendations and action planning phase, findings are presented and workshopped in a facilitated session.  Together, priorities are agreed, responsibilities are assigned and realistic timelines are established to guide implementation.

The program concludes with implementation support, including a dedicated session to explore relevant resources, partnerships and funding opportunities.  A six-month follow-up review is conducted to assess progress, provide further guidance and ensure momentum is maintained.

The Outcome

By the end of the program, participating organisations will have a clear understanding of their leadership and workforce strengths, along with a deeper awareness of key governance and capability gaps.  They will be equipped with a practical and actionable workforce sustainability plan tailored to their needs, positioning them more effectively for long-term growth, stronger leadership continuity and a greater overall impact within their community.
