VALiD’s Ballarat Working Together Group invite nominations for three categories of awards to acknowledge leadership and advocacy for access and inclusion of people with disability within the City of Ballarat.

VALiD invite nominations for citizens of Ballarat with a lived experience of disability who meet the criteria for one or more of the following awards.

Award Categories

This award honours two of Ballarat’s noted disability advocates and activists for access and inclusion – Shane Everard and Matt Mattson – both of whom made significant contributions to improving opportunities for people with disability and raising public awareness of disability access issues in Ballarat.

Selection Criteria 

The nominee is a resident of Ballarat with lived experience of disability who meets at least 2 of the following criteria:

  • Plays a significant community volunteering role in advocating for access and inclusion
  • Shows leadership and is a positive role model
  • Is a strong advocate for life in the community for all people with disability
  • Shows personal strength and achievement against adversity

This award recognises an emerging young leader (aged 16 – 25 years) who has demonstrated good leadership in promoting inclusion and access for people with disability.  

Selection Criteria 

The nominee is a resident of Ballarat with lived experience of disability between the ages of 16 and 25 years who meets at least 2 of the following criteria:

  • Is a confident self-advocate and positive role model for others
  • Is active in promoting community participation and inclusion for people with disability
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities within their local community

This award, sponsored by Sports Central, recognises someone who has demonstrated achievement in sport and recreation and has shown leadership in promoting inclusion and access for people with disability in this area of community life. 

Selection Criteria 

The nominee is a resident of Ballarat with lived experience of disability who meets at least 2 of the following criteria:

  • Plays an active role in raising community awareness about the value of inclusive sport and recreation for people with disability
  • Is successful in a particular area of sport and recreation and is a positive role model for others
  • Makes a significant voluntary commitment to the Ballarat community through sport and recreation

Nomination Process

  1. Complete a nomination for someone who you think meets the criteria for one of the above awards using the following key headings. Please keep it brief.
    1. Name of Award
    2. Name of the person you are nominating
    3. Use the criteria listed for this award to tell us why you have nominated this person
    4. Tell us your name, contact details and how you know the person you have nominated

  3. Nominations will be considered by a panel and winners will be announced on December 3rd at VALiD’s celebration event.

The awards will be announced at an event to mark International Day of People with Disability on the 3rd of December 2021 at a BBQ celebration at Lake Wendouree (if permitted) or online if COVID restrictions are still in force.
